Listening Prayer
Listening prayer is just what it says. It is open conversation in prayer that involves thanking God for His presence, talking aloud with Him about matters on our hearts, asking questions appropriate for our heavenly Father, then listening and responding as He leads.
Here are some key principles of listening prayer.
- God is present and He listens. He is not offended by honest expression of anger, fear, or frustration. He is not bored with our concerns and is truly interested in our freedom from everything that hinders us. We may ask God specific questions about our lives and relationship with Him, or open-ended ones such as, “What do You want to tell me about…?”
- God knows. He can show us the roots of any sexual, emotional, spiritual, or physical problem because He was there in those tragic and hurtful times. His presence doesn’t change the historical event, but because He knows the truth about those times He can tell us the truth about our problems and set us free from them.
- God can speak to us. He has spoken in the past through a clear voice, mental images (Daniel 2, Acts 10:11), distinct impressions and realizations (Jeremiah 18:1-6, Acts 2:36-37; 10:1-48, Romans 8:16) and has promised to speak to us (John 14:25-26; 16:13-14).
- We can listen and hear. Listening prayer is a conversation with God. We can hear Him because we wait and listen. The Freedom Quest Ministry volunteers and those you choose to bring along are present to help you engage in that conversation.
- God heals and can give you freedom from your struggles when you ask. We must be sincere, going to Christ ready to let go and be changed supernaturally in heart, soul, mind, and body. We also need to be ready to confess our errors, patient in the process of change, and strong to live in the freedom God gives.
- Listening prayer is not new. Adam and Eve started it because God was present in the Garden of Eden. God hasn’t left us and people have been talking with Him and asking Him to work in their lives ever since. It’s a natural response because God is with us. You can initiate your conversation with God.
